Farming Life, September 2010

sept-2010-imgCereal growers across Northern Ireland will be in winter crop planting mode over the next few weeks.

Ad while most farmers automatically think of a suitable compound as the fertiliser option that best meet the needs of winter cereal crops at any time of the year, the good news is that there is a much cheaper, yet equally effective option, available – slurry.

But don’t forget using a conventional tanker and splash plate once the crop has reached the post germination stage: the trick is to use an umbilical system with dribble bar attachment, GPS system and a highly accurate flow meter. It all adds up to the SlurryKat way of putting slurry to optimum use.

“We have been trailing the system on cereal ground for the past three years now.” SlurryKat’s Garth Cairns told Farming Life.

“Slurry constitutes the perfect combination to get winter cereal crops off to a flying start at this time of the year, provided it can be spread accurately and without causing serious ground compaction problems. Our umbilical spreading system with dribble bar attachment meets his requirement in full.”

He added: “Prior to ploughing and sowing slurry provides the P and K required to encourage optimum root growth and crop establishment. This delivers all the addition nutrients the crops need at the early stages.”

Using a SlurryKat umbilical system and dribble bar it is possible to spread up to 45,000 gallons of slurry per hour.

“Our dribble bar technologies work in tandem with our umbilical spreading systems. This is helping to ensure that slurry is spread extremely accurately in every field. The reduction in volatilisation is ensuring that smells are reduced by up to 80% and the fertiliser value of the slurry is maximised.”

He concluded: “With the continued high costs of compound fertilisers over the last few years I really consider slurry to be Liquid Gold due to its high financial value to cereal and pasture crops and at present can be calculated it to be worth in the region of £120.00 - £132.00 GBP per hectare per year at 2009-10 fertiliser prices.”

Most growers have slurry available and are not making best use of it in their crop systems.

He continued: “All our customers who opted to use slurry as part of the nutrient requirements applied to their cereal crop have found an additional yield of 0.74 – 1.48 tonnes per hectare over crops that only received artificial compound fertiliser.

These increased grower yields in slurry applied crops with no extra costs clearly demonstrates that it pays to use slurry on cereal crops where available and brings a whole new meaning to the word Slurry Liquid Gold.”

SlurryKat has confirmed to Farming Life that it will be featuring its award winning 7.5metre slurry spreading Duo Dribble Bar at this year’s Irish Ploughing Match in Athy, Co Kildare.

The recent addition to the Co Armagh company’s fast expanding product range received an award for Advances in the Technical Innovation at the Highland Show back in July.

The new SlurryKat Dribble Bar, which can be used on both tanker and umbilical systems, has a working width of 7.5 metres. It also features a vertical hydraulic folding system.

“The new system has been christened ‘Duo’ because it is dual purpose in nature,” SlurryKat’s Garth Cairns further explained.

“It can be fitted onto any tanker then removed and then used as part of the SlurryKat umbilical system. It can lift the range of SlurryKat reelers in the same manner as that achieved with the rest of the dribble bar range without any changes or modifications from the tanker mounted application or the reeler for the pipe system. The other SlurryKat dribble bars have a working width ranging from 6 to 24 metres.” Other features of the Duo include a Vogelsang Exacut macerator / distribution system and a high flow UV resistant delivery hose system, which guarantees a uniquely uniform spread pattern.

“The reeler lift frame comes as standard, as does the 360 degrees hose swivel,” commented Garth Cairns.

“The Duo also features a stone or debris trap. It has a compact ergonomic design. This eliminates tank off balance and tail swing problems on rear of tankers, as experienced with trailing shoe systems. It has a lightweight robust design, featuring the full range of proven SlurryKat design features. The Duo is of fully galvanised construction, which adds significantly to the length of its working life.

“Proven SlurryKat designs demonstrate a very ergonomic and efficient system that puts SlurryKat as the technical leader in the manufacture of dribble bars and very specialised slurry equipment to suit both farmers and agricultural contractors.”

He continued: “The recognition gained at the Highland Show reflects very positively on the international acceptance SlurryKat is now receiving.

“A lot of time and effort has been put in to design and manufacture a range of slurry equipment which is both innovative and reliable. Our product range is already in keen demand form both farmers and contractors here in the UK, Australia and New Zealand and Russia.”

SlurryKat has also announced that it has been appointed exclusive UK and Ireland importers for the Doda range of pumps, aerators, separators and biogas mixers.

“The new arrangements took effect at the beginning of August,” Garth Cairns confirmed.

“We have had a very constructive working relationship with the Italian company for a number of years but to have it now exclusively means we can really fully support all Doda customers in the SlurryKat personal way. A cross section of the Doda product range will feature on our stand at the Ploughing Match.

SlurryKat was among the real winners at this year’s Highland Show courtesy of the certificate for advances in Technical Innovation the Waringstown Company received for its slurry spreading Duo Dribble Bar.

This unique accolade follows on from the company’s recent success in the inaugural Craigavon Business Awards, which saw SlurryKat selected as the Best New Business in the region while its founder and owner Garth Cairns was hailed as the ‘Sir Allen Mc Clay Young Business Person of the Year’.

"We design and manufacture all our systems at Waringstown," Garth Cairns confirmed, “Our core objective it provide farmers and con-tractors with the wherewithal to spread slurry quickly and accurately. The dribble bar systems allow slurry to be placed exactly where it is need-ed to maximise crop growth while, at the same time reducing odours by up to 50%."

SlurryKat is currently exporting its product range to all parts of the uk and Ireland plus Australia, South Africa, Russia, the United States, South America and Iran.

“Slurry is no longer regarded as a waste product within agriculture." Garth Cairns continued. "Rather it is a valuable source of fertiliser. Our systems have been designed and manufactured to allow farmers maximise the value of their slurry when it is applied to grassland and crops."

Garth concluded: "It was a tremendous honour to receive this year's awards. The late it Alan Mc Clay was one of Northern Ireland's greatest entrepreneurs. And I am humbled to be the inaugural recipient of an Award that was established in memory of his unique achievements."
