Gibson Agri Contracts: Overcoming Challenging Conditions with a Full SlurryKat System
Recent months have brought difficult conditions for farmers and contractors. Heavy rainfall, saturated soils and limited working windows have made slurry management increasingly challenging, with pits and lagoons filling quickly while opportunities to spread remain limited.
For SlurryKat customer, Gibson Agri Contracts, the solution has been investing in a full SlurryKat slurry spreading system that allows them to continue working efficiently even when conditions are far from ideal.
Owned by Davy Gibson, the business provides slurry spreading, silage and agricultural contracting services across Northern Ireland. With bad weather presenting serious challenges for the agricultural industry, investing in the right equipment became essential.
"As everybody knows this year, challenging conditions, farmers are tormented, contractors are tormented, so to improve our business, we went for a nurse tank this year. Main reason for that is quickness, efficiency and reducing costs for the farmer."
Gibson Agri Contracts Complete SlurryKat System
Gibson Agri Contracts operate a complete SlurryKat slurry handling and application system, including: (click the product below to discover more)
This system allows slurry to be transported efficiently from the slurry source, to the field edge using ferry tankers, stored in the nurse tank and then pumped via umbilical hose to the dribble bar in the field.
SlurryKat slurry handling technology is built on 30 years of agricultural contracting experience, developed by an expert team that understands the realities of real field work. Every machine is manufactured in our world class production facilities and tested at SlurryKat's industry leading on site research and development centre, ensuring durability, performance and reliability season after season.
Flexibility When Conditions Are Challenging
At their out farm near Templepatrick, the conditions highlight why flexibility is so important.
"Normally we direct pipe this farm. Problem being, weather conditions this year have not been adequate for us to do all the jobs at the same time. Different fields dry at different times so, the nurse tank has allowed us the option today."
Using the nurse tank allows Gibson Agri Contracts to position the system where it works best without disturbing fields that are already recovering.
"This farm here, I do not want to go across the fields that were already piped, so the most efficient thing to do is, drop the nurse tank off, blow into it. I'm not losing time because of the efficiency that we're able to move the slurry quickly and we're not damaging any ground that has been slurried and is trying to dry."
With high rainfall across the season, slurry storage has filled rapidly across many farms.
"So obviously this with the amount of rainfall, slurry pits, open stores, tanks, they've all filled up a lot quicker."
Being able to continue spreading when opportunities arise is critical.
Efficiency That Saves Hours Every Day
A major advantage of their SlurryKat system is keeping every part of the operation moving efficiently.
"The nurse tank being parked at the edge of the field, parked on the verge, lane ways."
"It's 65m3, so we can actually put 4 loads of 3500G of slurry into it."
Because the ferry tankers can continue transporting slurry while filling the nurse tank and the hose system is reeling out, downtime is dramatically reduced.
"Our tankers are never sitting while our pipe man's reeling out."
"When he's reeling out we're saving 20 minutes, 30 minutes here and there."
Over the course of a full working day, the efficiency gains are significant.
"By the end of the day we can save 2 to 3 hours a day and have your slurry moved quicker."
Getting on the Land Earlier
For farmers and contractors, being able to access fields earlier in the season is a major advantage. SlurryKat machinery is designed to be lightweight and robust, helping you spread when others can't. Gibson Agri Contracts' SlurryKat system allows them to operate with minimal equipment travelling across the field.
"The Beauty about the nurse tank umbilical system, it's allowing us to get on the ground earlier."
"One tractor in the field, the nurse tank is sitting at the roadside, laneways, anything that is convenient and handy."
This approach improves efficiency while protecting soil structure.
"You're reducing the mess and time and one tractor in the field is all you need. Especially with conditions as wet as they are."
The impact on their business has been clear.
"For us being able to run that one pipe system, more than 100% has allowed us to increase our business and customer fold."
Lightweight Application, Lower Compaction
Once the slurry reaches the field, it is applied using the 12m Premium Plus™ Duo Dribble Bar, designed for efficient application while reducing soil compaction.
"Also the 12m dribble bar, you're getting a good scope of ground covered, you're lowering your compaction and your area of compaction. That's the key factor this year."
SlurryKat dribble bars are engineered using high strength, high tensile steel and durable components, delivering great output while maintaining a lightweight design. This helps protect soil structure, improves nutrient placement and allows spreading in more challenging conditions.
Built for Strength: The SlurryKat Nurse Tank
Central to the system is the 65m³ Nurse Tank, engineered for strength, stability and high volume slurry transfer.
"Whenever she's empty, it follows you very nice on the road, it sits nice, but it's the build quality of the nurse tank. It's second to none."
"The structure and the engineering in that there, it's absolutely second to none."
Despite carrying significant volume, the tanker remains strong and stable.
"You know, you're putting four loads of slurry in that. The first time we filled her full, I would've been worried about her bowing out or anything but no, very strong."
"She's very stable. There's no wiggle room or anything."
Manufactured using high quality structural steel and robust engineering, SlurryKat nurse tanks are designed to handle demanding workloads while maintaining excellent output and continuous flow, teamed with the reliable DODA pump on the front of the drawbar.
Proven Performance: SlurryKat Ferry Tankers
Gibson Agri Contracts operate three 3500G SlurryKat Premium Plus™ ferry tankers, chosen for their quality and balance between capacity and ground protection. For contractors working across varied terrain, strength and stability, whilst also being lightweight are key for road transport and in field work.
"Ferry tankers, great job. They're very efficient for the volume you are moving. Alot of our work, it does lie in the summer is, going into the field so 3500G is that perfect weight for us to be able to utilise volume and ground compaction."
SlurryKat tankers are manufactured using high tensile steel and a tapered chassis design, developed from years of real world contracting experience to ensure balanced weight distribution and smooth towing.
"Build quality of the SlurryKat tankers is second to none. The way the tankers follow you on the road, towing and the way the tankers distributes the weight on your tractor, they're nice and easy to tow. It doesn't feel like you're getting pushed along. They're very stable on the road. The tanker sits steady. They're not too high. Even with the booms on, we're still able to get into 90%, 95% of the tanks that we go to. So you haven't got a big high tanker even though there is a boom on it and the weight distributed on the drawbar is very even, it just makes life so much simpler and easier on tractor."
Even after years of heavy use, durability remains impressive on the tankers, especially with our 7 year paint warranty, helping with longevity of the tanker.
"There's a tanker there sitting at 5 year old now and if you wash her she's as good as new."
"There's No Reason You Wouldn't Go SlurryKat"
For Gibson Agri Contracts, the reliability and efficiency of their SlurryKat equipment has been proven in real working conditions.
"I would highly recommend SlurryKat. Reliability of a SlurryKat has been proven. There's no reason, you wouldn't go SlurryKat."
