Yard Person

Role Overview

The Yard Operative plays a key hands-on role within SlurryKat's manufacturing operation. Working across the yard and production facility, you will be responsible for the safe movement of materials and finished goods, supporting assembly activities, loading and unloading of HGVs and other vehicles, and maintaining the yard and production areas to a high standard. This is a varied and physical role that is central to keeping production running efficiently and safely.

Key Responsibilities

FLT & Vehicle Operation

• Operate forklift trucks (FLT) and other yard vehicles safely and efficiently at all times.
• Carry out pre-use checks and basic maintenance on FLTs and other equipment, reporting defects promptly.
• Ensure all loads are correctly secured and safe to transport before moving.
• Operate in strict accordance with company Health & Safety policies and site traffic management rules.

Loading & Unloading

• Load and unload HGVs, curtainsiders, flatbeds, and other delivery/collection vehicles safely and to schedule.
• Verify incoming deliveries against documentation, reporting discrepancies to the Production Manager.
• Ensure outgoing finished goods are correctly loaded, secured, and documented prior to dispatch.
• Co-ordinate with drivers and logistics teams to ensure efficient turnaround of vehicles.

Assembly Support

• Assist in the assembly of SlurryKat machinery and equipment in line with the production schedule and build instructions.
• Ensure production bays are consistently stocked with the correct components and sub-assemblies.
• Move completed assemblies and part-finished units to the next stage of production in a timely manner.
• Work closely with fabrication and assembly teams to support workflow and minimise downtime.

Yard & Factory Maintenance

• Maintain the yard and surrounding areas to a consistently high standard of cleanliness and organisation.
• Manage pallets, stillages, and storage areas efficiently to maximise use of space and ensure safe access.
• Carry out routine yard housekeeping duties including sweeping, waste management, and clear-way maintenance.
• Report any hazards, damage, or maintenance requirements to the Production Manager without delay.
• Assist in seasonal or periodic yard maintenance tasks as directed, including ground upkeep and storage reorganisation.

Skills & Qualifications

Essential

• Minimum 3 years' experience operating a forklift truck in a busy manufacturing or industrial environment.
• Valid and in-date FLT licence (counterbalance; reach truck advantageous).
• Experience loading and unloading HGVs and working to logistics schedules.
• Ability to assist with machinery or equipment assembly, following instructions and drawings.
• Strong understanding of Health & Safety practices in a manufacturing/yard setting.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team.
• Ability to use own initiative and manage workload with minimal supervision.
• Physically fit and able to undertake the demands of the role.

Desirable

• Experience working within an agricultural machinery or engineering manufacturing environment.
• Familiarity with production scheduling and materials handling in a lean manufacturing context.
• Basic mechanical aptitude and ability to assist with minor equipment maintenance.
